Concept Development/Refinment

Concept Development and Refinement

I managed to remove cross off one of the concepts leaving me my simplistic concepts to refine and develop. This was the first one...

After making mock ups and doing some basic testing I realized that this idea however simple dosnt function to well. There is to much pressure on the top connection. It can be fixed but I think this idea would have to many problems to make of it worth it.

Mock Up...

Second Concept to develop, the flat pack stool...

This idea was one of my favorites, but again after doing some testing and creating some moch ups there were simple complications that occurred when translated into cardboard. The idea worked perfectly in all the paper trials but the extra weight/thickness of the cardboard create problems..

Once placed together the design wouldn't stay in shape unless constant pressure, however light, was enforced on top. This sketch explains...

After making a few adjustments to relieve the tention created inside the design, (in hoped to make it free standing) but no tweaks worked!! By accident, after making adjustments to one of the mock ups I took pressure off the mock up and it stood by itself, haha, but in a position I didn't fore see.....

But cutting off the corners it makes the model sit in a different position...

I didn't realize this at the time so I continued trying to get the previous idea to work by create larger gaps to try and release the tension inside...

Again the failed, haha, so I redid the cut off idea with better fitting dimensions...

This idea is still stronge but much more stable, and I can enlarge the design to allow 2 or even 4 people to fit on the chair. There are still a few problems...

This legs still want to slide out, I need to create a small change to the legs allowing them to sit in the correct position..... the battle continues!!!!

Final Concepts

Final Concepts

These are my final concepts!

Research Continued!!!

Research Continued!!!

Here are some sketches based on origami and furniture in general!

Research....

Idea 4.
I love the simplicity of the top sketch. I think I'll flip the design upside down and place the folds inside the box for strength and to make it hold together better.

Idea 5, the 7 shaped stool!

Now I will pic 3 ideas to further!!!!

DECISION TIME!!!!!!!!!!

My Own Brief + Inspiration

Event Research / Inspiration!!
This is a sum up of the Melbourne Design Made Trade festival. My chosen event for creating card board chair.

The Melbourne Design Made Trade is run annually, it will be held from 15-25, of July this year. Our home grown festival spreads its wings across the whole city, running events throughout Melbourne city and beyond. The point of the festival is to celebrate Melbourne deep design and creative culture. A whole range of furniture is used throughout the process, from stools at small events, to lounges in coffee shops.

Things is discovered while researching the MDMT...
1. People are always moving, they do not stay in one place for too long (plus the venue dosent want people lingering in one spot for hours)

2. There is limited space

3. By the time it starts its practically over, everything is fast paced.

4. Set up must be quick and easy

I think the furniture I design has to reflect and solve these issues.

Solution
1. My chair must be at the correct ergonomic height but with no back or arm rests. This will enable people to rest for 15- 20 mins but never get comfortable enough to linger indefinitely.

2. Small spacious stool, light wieght that hold 150kg and has a viod running through the middle. This gives a feeling of space, making a space look bigger. Must be flat packed and easierly transported in large numbers.

3/4. The stool must be constructed within a minute by one person. The stool must be a single piece of card board. This will eliminate any problems of lost parts/missing items.

RESEARCH!!!

RESEARCH!!!

To get a feel for card board chairs and the chairs in general I began to visit furniture shops, the net to find different examples to gain inspiration from. I started to do quick sketches of the chairs i thought would be good examples for later reference.

Here are some examples...

After conducting my initial research I started to sketch idea inspired by this research...

The first idea I had was to keep the chair, structurally to a complete minimum, basic shapes only. Thus making them extremely easy to flat pack and construct out of cardboard, and perfect for use as temporary exhibition furniture.

My second idea was inspired by the simplest intertwining triangle. I wanted to use a few strips of x-board thats slots and bent together to create a simple chair.

I then explored this idea to create more functional outcomes...

The previous ideas were sound but nothing special. So I started to think how i could utilize the strengths of x-board by employing the different types of folds possible, thus playing off its weaknesses.

I really like this rough consept but it needed to be developed to become realistic. the curved strips would have to sit in a based acting as the locking mechanism while the board takes the wieght by compressing on itself, thus i called this concept the compression chair.

Development.... I wanted to know if the x-board could hold up at all to this kind of concept so I create a scale model 1:15th the size.

Scale model of basic chair consept...

Weights applied...

The test were surprisingly sucsesful. The scale model held up 5.5kg before the middle (where a person would sit) got to close to the ground. Thats alot more than expected.

5.5 x 15 =82.5 kg

This basic consept would hold up an everage person but this chair needs to hold 150kg for safty reasons. So i developed the idea more to incorperate more strength and more comfort.

I like this concept a lot, it would be difficult to build tho...

I've done a quick render to see it a bit more weight, to see if it looks somewhat acceptable in fake reality haha!

The ideation continues, ill check back later!

E4 - Fib's Theory

Fib's Theory

I tried to create as many paper objects related to Fibonacci number system, either by folding in accordance with the numbers or by using them as measurements.

Solution 1.

Using fibs equation to measure the edge of each fold, thus gradually getting larger.
Ps. I named them as I went.

Solution 2. A combination of the a few crane origami techniques and fibs equation.
